From Watching Formula 1 to Racing Yourself: Your Motorsport Journey Starts Here
· 5 min read

Every Formula 1 driver started somewhere. Now it's time for the next generation to take their first step.
Watching Formula 1 is exciting. The speed, the racing, the skill and the ambition to reach the very top of motorsport. For many young fans, it sparks a dream of one day becoming a racing driver themselves.
But how do you turn that dream into reality?
At FAT Karting League, we're making motorsport more accessible for the next generation of racing drivers, giving children aged 5–17 (from age 6 outside the UK) the opportunity to get behind the wheel, develop their skills and discover their potential.
Whether your child has never driven a kart before or already has racing experience, their journey starts here.

From Watching F1 to Racing Yourself
Every Formula 1 driver began their career somewhere, and for many, that journey started in karting.
Karting is where young drivers learn the fundamentals of racing. From mastering braking points and racing lines to building confidence, developing racecraft and learning how to compete.
But getting started in motorsport can often feel complicated, expensive and inaccessible, especially for families with no previous racing experience.
That's why FAT Karting League was created.
Co-founded by former Ferrari Formula 1 engineer Rob Smedley, FAT Karting League is designed to open up motorsport to the next generation, creating opportunities based on talent and potential, rather than access to expensive equipment.
No kart ownership. No previous experience required. Just the opportunity to get started.
Your First Step: Driver Development Sessions
The best place to begin your child's racing journey is with a FAT Karting League Driver Development Session.
Designed for young drivers aged 5–17 (from age 6 outside the UK), our Driver Development Sessions provide a structured introduction to motorsport, while also helping more experienced drivers continue to improve.
With our arrive-and-drive format, we provide the karts, equipment and on-track support, making it easy for families to get involved.
Throughout the day, drivers get valuable track time alongside guidance and feedback to help them build their skills.
They'll work on key areas of driving, including:
- Kart control: Developing confidence and understanding how to handle the kart.
- Racing lines: Learning how to approach corners and carry speed around the circuit.
- Braking and momentum: Understanding how to drive smoothly and consistently.
- Racecraft: Building awareness, learning overtaking techniques and developing the skills needed to race.
- Confidence: Progressing at their own pace in a supportive environment.
For beginners, it's an exciting introduction to the world of motorsport. For drivers with experience, it's an opportunity to sharpen their skills and take the next step.
And it's about more than just driving faster. It's about learning, improving and discovering what's possible.

A Real Racing Pathway: From First Laps to Future Champions
A Driver Development Session is just the beginning.
At FAT Karting League, we've created a structured pathway that helps young drivers progress through motorsport, from their very first laps to competitive racing and beyond.
Our development programme is designed to help every driver build their ability and confidence before progressing into the right level of competition.
Step 1: Driver Development
Every journey starts with developing the fundamentals.
Through Driver Development Sessions, young drivers begin with an assessment, learn essential skills, gain track experience and work towards the level required to enter competitive racing.
Whether they're starting from zero or building on existing experience, there's an opportunity to keep progressing.
Step 2: Regional Championship
For drivers ready to experience competitive racing, our Regional Championship provides an accessible introduction.
Drivers need Driver Development Level 2 eligibility and race with Kart Power Level 2. Designed for developing drivers, it offers the excitement of racing in a structured environment where they can continue learning, building confidence and gaining valuable race experience.
Step 3: Pro Championship
Drivers with Driver Development Level 3 eligibility and relevant racing experience can enter our Pro Championship. Regional and Pro are championship options for different experience levels, rather than mandatory sequential steps.
With Kart Power Level 3 (maximum power) and a more competitive racing environment, the Pro Championship challenges drivers to put their abilities to the test and continue pushing their performance.
Step 4: World Finals
The journey doesn't stop at regional racing.
Our World Finals bring together qualifying drivers from across FAT Karting League's international regions, providing an opportunity to compete on a global stage.
It's a chance for young drivers to experience international competition and demonstrate their talent.

Step 5: The Pathway to Formula 4
For drivers with the talent, dedication and potential to progress further, FAT Karting League offers something even bigger.
A pathway to compete for a fully funded British Formula 4 seat with FAT Racing.
The seat is a competitive prize, not a guaranteed outcome. Shootout eligibility is for Junior drivers aged 15–17.
Formula 4 is an important step on the single-seater racing ladder, helping talented young drivers transition from karting into car racing.
By creating a pathway from grassroots karting to Formula 4, we're working to make opportunities in motorsport more accessible to the next generation.

Motorsport Made Accessible
One of the biggest barriers to entering motorsport has traditionally been the cost and complexity of getting started.
Buying a kart, maintaining equipment, organising transport and finding the right opportunities to race can make the sport difficult for families to access.
FAT Karting League is changing that.
Our arrive-and-drive model removes many of those barriers, making it easier for more children to experience motorsport.
No Kart Needed
We provide the karts and equipment, so there's no need to invest in your own racing kart to get started.
Ages 5–17
Our programme welcomes young drivers across a range of ages and abilities, from complete beginners to experienced racers. Minimum age is 5 in the UK and 6 in other regions; age group and eligibility are confirmed at checkout.
Development at Every Stage
With Driver Development Sessions and championships designed for different ability levels, young drivers have opportunities to learn, improve and progress.
A Pathway Beyond Karting
From their first experience on track to the opportunity to progress towards Formula 4, FAT Karting League provides a clear route for aspiring racing drivers.
The Future of Racing Starts Here
Not every child who steps into a kart will become a Formula 1 driver. But every child deserves the opportunity to discover what they're capable of.
For some, that might mean building confidence, making friends and discovering a new passion. For others, it could be the beginning of a journey towards competitive motorsport.
Whatever their ambitions, we're here to help them take the first step.
From watching Formula 1 to getting behind the wheel themselves, this is where their racing journey begins.
